Sandy Nguyen - Jailed After Faking 6-Year-Old Son's Cancer To Scam Donors Out Of $25,000

Aurora, Colo. (The Weekly Vice) - Sandy Nguyen, a 28-year-old Colorado woman, has been jailed after she allegedly convinced her 6-year-old son that he was dying of cancer in an effort to raise money for treatment he never required.

According to the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office, Nguyen told friends, family members and various charitable donors that her son was dying of leukemia for more than a year in an effort to scam them out of thousands of dollars that she claimed was needed for her son's purported cancer treatments.

During the past year, Nguyen accepted cash donations from private donors, family members, school districts and other organizations who were convinced the boy was dying of cancer and was unable to pay for necessary treatments to combat the disease.

Investigators say the boy's elementary school, Rolling Hills Elementary, raised money to help with the treatments. The principal of the school told investigators that approximately 600 students volunteered to help with the fund raiser. Many children gave up their allowances or asked their parents and grandparents to donate to the cause.

The investigation also revealed that Nguyen "did convince her son, family and community that her 6-year-old son had cancer and was receiving cancer treatment since approximately September 2012," according to court documents.

More than $25,000 was raised and placed into an account for the Nguyen family. Part of the money was used by Nguyen to take herself and the family to Disneyland.

Nguyen's Facebook page reportedly displayed a banner photograph that showed her son with a bald head - resembling a patient who had undergone chemotherapy treatment. Other photographs on the page showed the boy with a full head of hair. The account has since been removed from Facebook.

An investigation was launched on March 7th after the Department of Human Services received a tip alleging that the boy did not have cancer and that Nguyen was collecting money under false pretenses.

Investigators who raided Nguyen's apartment found $23,000 stashed away in a closet. During a police interview Nguyen admitted that her son does not have cancer. She reportedly denied asking for donations but did not deny accepting them.

Nguyen was booked into the Arapahoe County Jail and charged with felony counts of theft and charitable fraud. She has been released on bond and is expected back in court on April 11.
