Memphis, Tenn. (The Weekly Vice) - Danny Smith, a 51-year-old Tennessee man, was jailed Monday after he allegedly called 911 to complain that he had been charged a penny too much for a bottle of beer.
According to police, officers were dispatched to the Nite and Day Food Market after Smith called 911 to report that he had been overcharged for a beer.
When officers arrived at the scene, Smith stated that he purchased a 16 ounce Heineken from the convenience store, however the clerk charged him a penny more than he thought he should owe.
The officers informed Smith that it was a civil matter and that he shouldn't use 911 for non-emergencies.
About 20 minutes later, Smith called 911 again using the same cell phone and requested officer assistance at the same location. When officers arrived, Smith complained again about the penny that he believed he was owed. Officers informed him again that it was a civil matter and that 911 was for non-emergency use only.
Investigators say Smith became agitated, walked across the store parking lot and called a non-emergency number demanding police assistance. Officers were still on the scene at the time Smith made the call.
Police assistance came in the form of handcuffs.
Smith was booked into jail and charged with misuse of 911. The fate of Smith's 16 ounce Heineken was undisclosed.
