Springfield, Mo. (The Weekly Vice) - Diane Staudte, a 51-year-old Missouri woman, has been jailed after she allegedly set out to kill her family with antifreeze, and succeeded in killing two of them.
According to police, officers were dispatched to a local hospital after an alert nurse noted that Staudte was acting a little too happy while her daughter was being hospitalized for a severe unknown ailment.
Investigators say the nurse's suspicion was raised when Staudte's daughter was admitted to Cox Hospital earlier this month complaining of severe flu-like symptoms.
While doctors struggled to figure out what was ailing 24-year-old Sarah Staudte, the girl's mother reportedly laughed and joked with hospital staff during the brief moments she came to visit.
During one visit, Diane Staudte seemed more occupied with a vacation she had planned rather than the welfare of her daughter. Even when hospital staff informed Diane that her daughter's condition was very serious, she seemed less than concerned over the news.
A doctor told detectives that he suspected that the girl might have been poisoned, but nothing had been confirmed at that point.
During a police interview on Thursday, Diane admitted to poisoning her daughter Sarah with antifreeze. When officers asked why she would want to kill her own daughter, Diane explained that her daughter wouldn't go out and get a job despite having student loans that were due.
During the interview Diane Staudte also admitted to killing her husband and son last year by pouring antifreeze into bottles of Gatorade.
Staudte's husband, 61-year-old Mark Staudte, passed away in April, 2012. At the time, Staudte told authorities that her husband hadn't been feeling well and was suffering from seizures.
Staudte's son, 26-year-old Shawn Staudte, passed away in September 2012. Staudte told authorities that time that her son had been suffering severe flu-like systems before his death.
When detectives asked why she killed her husband and son, Staudte stated that she "hated" her husband and that her son "was worse than a pest."
Diane Staudte originally told police that she acted alone in the poisoning of her husband, son and daughter. During a subsequent on Friday, however, Staudte admitted that she and her younger daughter, 22-year-old Rachel Staudte, researched and planned the poison killings together.
When detectives interviewed Rachel, Staudte, she initially denied any involvement, but later confessed after she had been confronted with evidence.
Diane and Rachel Staudte have both been charged with two counts of first-degree murder, first-degree assault and armed criminal action.
