Syracuse, N.Y. (The Weekly Vice) - David Renz, a 29-year-old New York man awaiting trial on child porn charges, was jailed again after he allegedly raped a 10-year-old girl before stabbing the child's mother to death.
According to police, Renz was released from jail and placed under monitored house arrest after he was charged with downloading and possessing child pornography.
At some point after his release, Renz reportedly acquired a package of zip ties and an air pistol that would later be used in the gruesome assault he committed on a 10-year-old girl and her mother.
On March 14, according to police, Renz disabled his home monitoring bracelet and reassembled it so that it would not immediately notify authorities that it had been tampered with. It only took a few hours for Renz to claim his first two victims.
Investigators say Renz followed a 10-year-old girl out into the CNY Gym Center parking lot and watched as she got into her mother's car. Renz then stopped the car, entered the vehicle and forced the woman at gunpoint to drive to a remote part of the parking lot.
Renz then bound both victims' hands with zip ties and proceeded to rape the little girl while her mother was forced to watch.
Renz then drove the vehicle a short distance until it became stuck in a snow bank. That's when the mother fought back (creating a distraction) while shouting at her daughter to run for help. While the little girl ran off and was rescued by a passing motorist, Renz strangled her mother with a zip tie and stabbed her repeatedly in the head and chest. The woman was later pronounced dead from her injuries at Upstate University Hospital.
Renz was quickly chased down and taken into custody with blood on his clothing and the woman's car keys in his pocket. The knife police believe was used to stab the victim was found in the snow outside the car. The air pistol reportedly used in the attack was never recovered.
On Wednesday, a judge set the case for trial beginning on June 3. In that case, Renz faces charges of murder, kidnapping, predatory sexual assault against a child, sexual abuse, menacing, weapon possession and possessing a sexual performance by a child.
Renz was indicted last month on the original case and also faces charges of receiving and possessing child pornography.
Prosecutors are seeking a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
