Phoenix, Ariz. (The Weekly Vice) - Nina Koistinen, a 36-year-old Arizona woman, was jailed Thursday after she allegedly killed her 6-day-old daughter because she thought she "had too many children."
According to Phoenix Police, an investigation was opened April 8th when Koistinen's husband called 911 after finding the baby lying unresponsive next to her mother.
The infant, whose name is Maya, was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead. An autopsy later revealed that the infant may have suffocated to death
During the initial interview, Koistinen told detectives that she fell asleep while nursing the infant. During the second interview, however, Koistinen admitted that she smothered the child because she had too many children already and was jealous over the attention her husband was giving the baby.
During a review of previous records obtained from Child Protective Services, detectives learned that Koistinen made statements about her desire to smother some of her children and wanting them to go to heaven in a vehicle accident that appeared intentional.
Koistinen's husband, Bradley, came to her defense during an initial court appearance stating that his wife was on medication for mental health issues and had "been the greatest mother."
Koistinen was booked into jail and charged with first-degree murder. Her bail has been set at $1 million.
