Houston, Texas (The Weekly Vice) - Maria Delores Guevara, a 32-year-old Houston woman, was jailed after she allegedly burned her 8-year-old son's hands with a hot griddle as punishment for alleged stealing.
According to Houston Police, an investigation was launched in December when teachers at Askew Elementary School noticed severe burns on a student's hands and contacted police to report the matter.
When detectives interviewed the boy, he told them that his mother inflicted the burns on him when she thought he had stolen a handheld gaming device.
As punishment, the boy's mother allegedly pressed both of his hands down on a hot griddle that had been heated up on the stove. The alleged punishment went on for two minutes before his mother allowed him to remove his hands.
When the boy's hands swelled up and began to blister, Guevara reportedly told her son that she would burn his tongue if he told anyone about the abuse.
Additionally, Guevara refused to seek medical attention for the boy's burns, according to the arrest affidavit.
When officers questioned Guevara about the incident, she admitted to burning the boy's hands, claiming that she only held them on the griddle for about a minute before her domestic partner intervened. She also admitted to threatening to burn his tongue on several occasions.
The child was immediately removed from school and placed into protective custody. Attempts are being made to locate a relative to care for him.
Guevara was booked into jail and charged with felony injury to a child. Her bond was set at $55,000.
