Kirksville, Missouri (The Weekly Vice) - Paul Ray Potter, a 49-year-old Kirksville man was jailed Sunday after he allegedly murdered and dismembered a victim, then threw the victim's arms at witnesses.
According to the Adair County Sheriff's Office, around 11:00 p.m, police responded to reports of a car on fire at a local apartment complex. When emergency crews arrived on the scene, they discovered that two apartment units were on fire, as well as a vehicle parked nearby.
Investigators say deputies spoke to several witnesses, who stated that they saw a man, later identified as Potter, fleeing from the vehicle right before it went up in flames. While officers were speaking to the witnesses, they saw Potter throw two objects at them. Those objects were determined to be severed human arms.
Police entered one of the apartment buildings and discovered a dismembered body with knife wounds to the face and sternum. Both arms that had been severed were later matched to the body found in the building.
Police also found blood evidence at both units as well as several knives in front of Potter's residence. Potter admitted to setting the fires in an attempt to conceal his crimes. The victim's identity has not been released.
Potter was booked into the Adair County Jail and charged with second-degree murder, second-degree arson and tampering with a motor vehicle. He is currently being held in lieu of $1,000,000 bail. Additional charges may be filed.
