The pair's attempt was foiled when their vehicle became stuck in the mud while attempting to flee the crime.
According to the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office, deputies were dispatched to a construction site near Highway 99 and East French Camp Road after someone called to report "suspicious activity" in the area.
Deputies arrived to find a Budget rental truck in the middle of a field that was parked next to a truck, a semi-truck, an excavator and a 'bobcat.' The Budget rental truck had apparently become stuck in a patch of mud because of the vehicle's weight.
Erik and Shannon Miller, who were found inside the rental truck, told deputies that they were attempting to steal "a little" gas from one of the vehicles so that they could continue their trip from Fresno to San Francisco. Erik Miller also told deputies that he attempted to hot wire one of the vehicles in an effort to free his truck from the mud.
The couple's story fell flat, however, when deputies looked inside the truck and found a 100 gallon tank, an electric pump and a series of siphon hoses.
Deputies also discovered that Erik Miller had an outstanding warrant for his arrest and Shannon Miller had obtained a restraining order against him from a prior domestic violence incident.
Erik and Shannon Miller were booked into the San Joaquin County Jail and charged with theft and possession of burglary tools. Erik Miller faces additional charges of tampering with a vehicle and violating a restraining order.
