Salinas, CA (The Weekly Vice) - An unnamed 12-year-old Salinas boy was jailed Friday after he allegedly hung the family's pet dog to death "because he wanted to see it die."
According to police, officers were dispatched to a Salinas area apartment after someone from the home called 911 and then hung up.
During the call, according to 911 operators, a female voice could be heard on the line stating "He's hurting the dog." An apparent struggle ensued over the phone before the call disconnected.
When officers arrived on the scene, the family inside refused to open the door. Officers eventually entered the apartment after obtaining a key from the apartment manager.
Officers walked into the apartment to discover a 12-pound terrior-mix dangling by its neck from a bedroom door knob.
About the same time, a 12-year-old boy was observed exiting the same bedroom while commenting "I was mad at the dog so I killed it" and "I did it because I wanted to see it die."
Investigators say the boy's older sister called 911 because their mother was not home at the time. The sister, aged 19, fled the apartment with another pet fearing for the animal's safety. She returned to the apartment shortly after police arrived.
When the boy's mother returned and was told that the boy would be taken to jail, the boy reportedly had no remorse and seemed to shrug the incident off, according to an arrest affidavit.
He was booked into Monterey County Juvenile Hall pending a charge of felony cruelty to an animal.
Most experts in California law agree that the case will likely take a path towards rehabilitation for the youth, rather than incarceration. The boy is expected to go before a judge by the end of the week.
