Bowling Green, KY (The Weekly Vice) - Kimberlie Gustwiller, a 38-year-old Ohio woman was jailed Friday after she allegedly pocketed thousands of dollars in donations after she pretended to have cancer.
According to police, Gustwiller pocket "several thousands of dollars" after she reportedly told friends and family members that she was suffering from Stage IV lymphoma.
Investigators say community members, well-wishers and area businesses ponied up thousands of dollars to help with Gustwiller's treatment after she claimed to have been stricken with the disease.
One business, a local hair salon, raised money for Gustwiller by streaking customer's hair pink. Several children in the community even made bracelets that were sold to help raise money for Gustwiller's proclaimed medical expenses.
A benefit that had been planned for October 20 by the North Baltimore Eagles was cancelled after news broke of Gustwiller's arrest.
Gustwiller's ruse was foiled when investigators became suspicious and obtained a subpoena for Gustwiller's medical records and learned that she had never been diagnosed or treated for any kind of cancer.
Gustwiller was booked into the Wood County Jail and charged with felony theft. She was released after posting a $1,500 bond.
