A sign outside the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Alice, Texas promises "Financial or medical aid, along with emotional support or pastoral care for any expectant mother facing a crisis pregnancy." The church's only condition, as stated on the sign, is that the child "be allowed to live."
According to Alice police, an unknown person decided to ditch the "emotional support" provisions of the deal and left a newborn infant on the front steps of the church sometime Wednesday morning.
Investigators say the child was found wrapped in a blanket inside a shoe box with the umbilical cord still attached. Doctors believe the child was likely born on Tuesday.
Paramedics took the infant to Christus Spohn Hospital in Alice where she underwent a health examination and was given a clean bill of health.
Instead of issuing threats of possible charges, Alice police took a different tone in reference to the unknown mother.
"I want to emphasize to the mother or the family members, whoever left the baby there, we are thankful that the baby was left at a safe haven," said Alice police Chief, Danny Bueno. "They can go to a church, a hospital, a police department, a fire department. It's a safe haven for a child, and we thank them for that."
The police chief went on to extend support to the unknown mother, should she decide to come forward.
"We want to help her and our people in the community will be more than glad to help her in any way, in any form and to help the family members if that is the case," Chief Bueno said.
So far, no one has come forward to claim the child or accept the aid promised.
