El Centro, Calif. (The Weekly Vice) - Anthony Sanchez, a 34-year-old elected official for the Imperial County Irrigation District has been charged after he was allegedly caught beating his stepson with a belt because the child dropped a ball during a game of catch.
According to the Imperial County Sheriff's Office, an investigation into child abuse allegations was launched after a neighbor uploaded a video to YouTube which allegedly shows Sanchez striking his 10-year-old stepson with a belt while playing catch in his back yard.
In the video, which was recorded last Wednesday, Sanchez and his stepson are seen playing catch in the family's back yard. During the 88-second video, Sanchez can be seen striking the boy with a belt on three occasions.
The boy can be seen crying and shielding himself from the belt during the confrontation.
Towards the end of the video, the neighbor (who is recording the video) shouts at Sanchez.
"That's enough....that's enough," yells the neighbor.
Sanchez can be heard admonishing the neighbor for prying into his business.
"I have a problem with you beating the (expletive) out of him because he won't catch the damn ball," the neighbor answers back.
Sanchez and the neighbor can be heard on the video trading a few barbs before the video ends.
As startling as the video is, the Sheriff's Office claims that the investigation has uncovered additional evidence (besides the video) and will continue the investigation.
In the wake of the incident, Sanchez has resigned his position with the district. Sanchez' wife and the boy are currently on vacation in Alabama while the investigation unfolds.
Sanchez, who was elected to the board in 2006, worked with the Imperial County Irrigation District that controls electricity and water distribution to the Imperial and Coachella valleys.
He was booked into jail Friday on suspicion of felony child abuse. His bond has been set at $100,000.
