Leandria Williams Tried To Win Mega-Millions With Fake Lottery Ticket. Got Mega-Jail Instead

Elgin, Illinois (The Weekly Vice) - Leandria Williams, a 28-year-old Elgin woman was jailed after she allegedly attempted to cash in a fake lottery ticket she purchased online.

According to the Cook County Sheriff's Office, Williams went to the lottery claims office in Des Plaines and claimed that she had a winning ticket for the $656 million lottery jackpot that was drawn on March 30th.

She was instructed to fill out a claim form, which would be sent to Springfield to be verified. She complied, and submitted the form along with
her documents. However, the claims office suspected that the ticket was fake because the locations for the winning tickets had already been determined, and none were in the Chicago area.

Investigators say officers confiscated Williams' fraudulent ticket and determined that it had been printed 8 minutes after the winning numbers were drawn. They also recovered an email receipt that had been tampered with.

Officials with the Lottery and deputies met with Williams on April 16th, and she was apprehended. Officials stated that this was the first attempted scam of this nature in the entire state of Illinois.

Williams was booked into jail and charged with wire fraud, attempted theft, and forgery.
