St. Paul, Minn. (The Weekly Vice) - Katie Elaine Lewis, a 24-year-old Minnesota woman, was charged Friday after she allegedly took her infant son to a hospital, then tried to suffocate him when doctors were unable to find anything wrong with him.
According to police, officers were dispatched to Children's Hospital in St. Paul after receiving a 911 call from a hospital staffer.
Investigators say Lewis brought her 5-month-old son to the hospital the previous day complaining that her son had stopped breathing and turned blue as a result.
Hospital staff performed a series of tests and concluded that there was nothing wrong with the child. The staff became suspicious when Lewis insisted that there was still something wrong with her child.
At about 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, a staffer witnessed Lewis covering the child's mouth and nose as the baby kicked frantically as if he couldn't breath.
Hospital staff quickly stepped in to stop the assault.
During a police interview, Lewis stated that her baby had stopped breathing on several occasions, beginning in February, 2012. She stated that she "wanted to do something" so that medical staff could help her child sooner.
She also admitted to being familiar with CPR, and knew how little pressure was needed to stop her baby's airflow.
Lewis was booked into jail and charged with child endangerment, domestic assault by strangulation and third-degree assault.
