Matthew Wong - Man Sets Himself On Fire While Attempting To Assault Estranged Wife With Gasoline

Tampa, Florida (The Weekly Vice) - Matthew Wong, a 50-year-old Wesley Chapel man was hospitalized after he allegedly tried to set his estranged wife on fire, but instead turned himself into a ball of flames.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Wong waited outside his 46-year-old wife's apartment Monday, driving a vehicle that he rented so she wouldn't recognize him.

When she left her apartment at around 7:00 a.m., he tried to pour a bottle of gasoline on her, hoping to set her ablaze.

Instead, the woman ran from Wong and he gave chase carrying the container of fuel and a lighter. A neighbor heard the woman's screams and pulled her into an apartment while Wong managed to spill gasoline on himself during the chase.

Wong retaliated by attempting to set the building on fire, and in the process managed to set himself on fire. Within moments, according to witnesses, Wong became a walking ball of flames.
Witnesses used a blanket and a fire extinguisher to put out the flames.

Wong was taken to Tampa General Hospital with third-degree burns covering most of his upper body. He was listed in critical condition.

Detectives do not have a motive in the case and have not yet taken Wong into custody due to his condition. The couple is still married but separated in October.
