Cayce, South Carolina (The Weekly Vice) - Gerald B. Hardin, a 34-year-old Cayce man was jailed after he allegedly cut off a friend's hand in an apparent insurance fraud scheme.
According to Cayce police, in May of 2008, Hardin and two other people devised a plan to cut off one of the suspect's hands in order to receive an insurance company payout. Hardin and another man used a pole saw to cut off their friend's hand.
Investigators say the men then filed claims against a home owner's insurance policy and three accidental death and dismemberment policies, receiving over $671,000. The other suspect's names were not on the indictment.
Hardin was booked into the Lexington County Jail and charged with mail fraud. He is currently being held in lieu of $100,000 bond. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison and $250,000 in fines.
