Vernice Zagerman - Jailed After Attempting To Give Granddaughter To Strangers At Local Gas Station

Houston, Texas (The Weekly Vice) - Vernice Ruenell Zagerman, a 52-year-old Houston woman was jailed Monday after she attempted to give her 3-year-old granddaughter away at a gas station.

According to Houston Police, Zagerman reportedly took the child to a local Shell gas station and asked several patrons if they wanted the girl. Zagerman allegedly told several people she was giving the child away because she could "no longer care for her".

When she couldn't find any takers, Zagerman and the child got into a cab and fled the scene.

Investigators say witness called police, who stopped the cab and apprehended Zagerman a few blocks away from the gas station.

The child was released to the child's mother, who asked Zagerman to watch her daughter while she was at work.

Court records show that Zagerman has a long list of prior arrests that include assault, theft, and drug charges. In 2004, she served time in prison after assaulting a police officer.

Zagerman was booked into jail and charged with child endangerment. She is being held in lieu of $15,000 bond.
