Martha Nicholas - Charged With Faking Cancer To Solicit Donations

Hanover, Virginia (The Weekly Vice) - Martha Nicholas, a 42-year-old Mechanicsville woman was jailed Wednesday after she allegedly faked having cancer so she could pocket charitable donations.

According to the Hanover County Sheriff's Office, detectives investigated an anonymous tip they received in April stating that Nicholas was pretending to have cancer in order to receive financial support from several generous donors.

Investigators say detectives attempted to question Nicholas about the allegations, but she refused to talk to them.

Detectives followed up on a list of hospitals, doctors, procedures and treatments that Nicholas claimed she had been associated with in regards to her cancer treatment. No evidence was found at any of those sources that confirmed she had been diagnosed with cancer.

Officers interviewed several people who gave Nicholas money because she claimed to need help covering the cost of cancer-related treatments.

Nicholas also told the American Cancer Society that she had battled cancer, and was an active participant and fundraiser in the Relay for Life events. Officers stated that she was very public with her claims, and told stories about surviving cancer four times.

Nicholas was booked into jail and charged with two counts of misdemeanor obtaining money by false pretenses. She is scheduled to appear in court on December 16th. Anyone with any information on the case is asked to call the Hanover County Sheriff's Office at 804-365-6140.
