Garden Grove, Ca. (The Weekly Vice) - Corrina Atuatasi, a 27-year-old California woman was jailed Wednesday after she allegedly let her newborn baby suffocate to death in a pile of laundry after she had gone on an all-night drinking binge.
According to police, Atuatasi was watching her 2-month-old son, Aiden, Oct 30, while her husband and 2-year-old daughter were away visiting family.
Investigators say Atuatasi left the child alone inside her apartment to smoke a cigarette out in the apartment complex courtyard.
While outside, Atuatasi was joined by a neighbor who convinced her to join him and two other friends at a drinking party taking place inside his apartment. Atuatasi reportedly accepted the invitation and drank with her neighbors for several hours.
At some point in the evening, Atuatasi remembered that she had a child and returned home to get him. She reportedly placed the infant in a car seat and rejoined the party for more drinking.
Police say Atuatasi returned home with the baby at about 4 a.m.. Somehow, the baby ended up face-down in a pile of laundry as Atuatasi fell asleep.
Officers were dispatched to the scene at about 6 a.m. when Atuatasi called 911 to report that her infant son was missing. When officers arrived on the scene, Atuatasi had already located her child who was found dead in a pile of clothes.
A blood-alcohol test showed Atuatasi to be intoxicated at nearly three times the legal driving limit when officer evaluated her three hours later.
She was booked into the Orange County Jail on charges of involuntary manslaughter and felony child abuse - causing great bodily harm. Her arraignment hearing has been set for Monday.
