Houston, Texas (The Weekly Vice) - Arlene Alaniz, a 28-year-old Texas woman was jailed Tuesday after she allegedly tied her special needs toddler to a crib and then starved him to the point of cardiac arrest.
According to police, an investigation was launched early last month after Alaniz' 3-year-old son was rushed to a Houston area hospital while in cardiac arrest.
Attending physicians say the little boy had stopped breathing, was severely malnourished and weighed just 26 pounds. The little boy's body was covered with bruises and cuts and he had endured an obvious decrease in muscle mass.
Investigators interviewed the toddler's 4-year-old brother who said his mother hits the boy because he's always crying. He also told police that his mother tied his younger brother to a crib with a rope to keep him from "escaping," according to the arrest affidavit.
Alaniz told investigators that she didn't know how her son received his injuries and the only reason she tied her son down was to keep his feeding tube from falling out. She then told detectives that she suffers from depression.
Neighbors who know the family told police that they weren't aware Alaniz had a second child because they never saw him.
Doctors have told investigators that the child's condition is consistent with abuse.
Alaniz was booked into the Harris County Jail on a charge of injury to a child. She remains held in lieu of $20,000 bond.
