Ringgold, GA (The Weekly Vice) - Jennifer Haines, a 31-year-old Georgia woman was jailed Tuesday after she allegedly dropped her 2-year-old daughter off in a ditch, and walked away.
She later told police that she couldn't care for the child and didn't want to anyway.
According to police, officers were dispatched after a woman reported finding a toddler abandoned in a ditch near a Catoosa County playground.
Investigators say Haines dropped the child off in a ditch, then walked to a nearby home to watch through the windows and see what happened.
Several motorists called police to report a toddler wearing shorts and a diaper walking down the street in the rain. Investigators say outside temperatures at the time were in the 50's.
Officers arrived on scene and began a door-to-door search for the child's missing parent. Officers were still conducting a sweep of nearby neighborhoods when a witness approached an officer and stated "There is a woman in our house that just walked in and won't leave."
Officers spoke with the woman, later identified as Haines, and requested that she accompany him to the park.
"When (the officer) opened the ambulance door, the child saw (Haines) and yelled 'Mommy!'"
During a police interview Haines told officers that she was addicted to prescription drugs and felt that she could no longer care for the child, nor wanted to.
She went on to say that she left the child unattended with the hope that a nice family would find her and care for her, stated a police arrest affidavit.
Haines was booked into jail on charges of contributing to the depravation of a minor, reckless conduct causing harm or endangerment of a minor, second-degree cruelty to children, and possession of marijuana.
