South Bend, Louisiana (The Weekly Vice) - Danielle Howey, 26, and Benjamin Sims, 27, were jailed after they allegedly used a 2-year-old boy they were babysitting to steal liquor and DVDs.
According to South Bend Police, the couple used a toddler they were trusted to watch to steal alcohol from a store - then crossed the street and attempted to use the same child to steal DVDs.
"It appears they put this child on top of a blanket, which was on top of some alcohol they were trying to conceal, and sort of used him as a decoy so you couldn't really tell what he was laying on top of," said police Capt. Phil Trent.
Investigators say the couple placed the 10 stolen bottles of alcohol into their car and then went across the street to a local Wal-Mart where they were caught on security camera attempting to steal hundreds of dollars in DVDs.
To make matters worse, the toddler's mother was frantically searching for her son after she came by to pick up her child and found nobody home.
"I got of work, went looking for my son.... Went to the house, but nobody was there. (I) kept calling and calling and driving all over to find him," said Nicole McCoullough. "I couldn't find him, didn't know where he was. Called the hospital, called everybody I knew trying to get a hold of them."
Police eventually did get a hold of the couple, with a pair of handcuffs.
Howey and Sims were booked into the St. Joseph County Jail and charged with felony theft.
