Plant City, Florida (The Weekly Vice) - Quentin Shunell Amos, a 21-year-old group-home caretaker has been jailed after he allegedly punished a mentally disabled man by forcing him to stand barefoot in mounds full of fire ants.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Amos was employed as a caretaker at Florida MENTOR - a group home that that has been licensed by Agency for Persons with Disabilities.
Investigators say Amos and another caretaker suspected that the mentally disabled resident had stolen money and checks from a worker at the home. To punish the resident, Amos allegedly forced the man to barefoot in a hill full of fire ants. When the ants had finished attacking the man, Amos then forced the victim to move to another ant hill that contained more fire ants.
The 21-year-old victim suffered a large number of bites to his feet, legs and arms. Residents told deputies that ant-hill punishment had been carried out by staff in the past.
Amos was booked into the Hillsborough County Jail and charged with abuse of an elderly or disabled adult. A second caretaker involved in the incident has not been charged.
