Jean Rubino - Grandma Jailed For Shoplifting Cookies. Serious Mugshot Pout Ensues

Portland, Oregon (The Weekly Vice) - Jean Rubino, a 78-year-old Portland resident who suffers from dementia was jailed Monday after she allegedly stole a $2.14 package of cookies from Walmart.

According to Portland police, Rubino was transported via shuttle bus from Laurelhurst House, an assisted living facility where she resides to a local Walmart. While she was inside the store, she allegedly picked up a bag of chips and a package of cookies. She put the cookies in her purse, then proceeded to the checkout line and paid only for the chips.

Investigators say a security guard stopped Rubino as she exited the store, and confiscated the cookies. She became aggressive and verbally abusive, causing employees to contact police.

When officers arrived, they tried to place her in handcuffs, but she refused to cooperate and told the officer that she hoped he would die.

A Walmart spokesman stated that this is the third time she had been caught shoplifting inside the store. The previous incidents were resolved by allowing her to return the items. Family members stated that she suffers from dementia, a loss of brain function that occurs with certain diseases that affects memory, thinking, language, judgment, and behavior. The arresting officer claims that her condition was not detected by him.

Rubino was booked into the Multnomah County Jail and charged with theft. Walmart stated that they have no plans to ban her from the store or press charges. It is now up to the district attorney’s office to prosecute or work out a deal.
