Sloane Briles - Jailed After Throwing Son Off Cruise Boat, Said Boy Needed To "Toughen Up"

Santa Ana, California (The Weekly Vice) - Sloane Briles, a 35-year-old Irvine man was jailed Sunday after he allegedly threw his 7-year-old son off of a cruise boat in front of passengers and crew members.

According to the Orange County Sheriff's Office, Briles was on a sight-seeing cruise with his girlfriend and two sons when he began arguing with his 7-year-old son.

Briles reportedly hit the boy several times, angering the passengers who witnessed the abuse. He then threatened to throw his son overboard if he didn't stop crying.

When the child didn't comply with his orders, Briles picked the boy up and threw him off the boat, stating that he needed to "toughen up."

Investigators say someone on the boat threw the child a life ring. He was then rescued by another boater in the area.

After others began to rush to the boy's aid, Briles jumped in the water to rescue the boy. Investigators believe Briles had been drinking before the incident.

According to court records,
Briles pleaded guilty to contempt of court for refusing to pay child support for the two children. His ex-wife reported that he rarely sees or talks to the children.

Briles was booked into jail and charged with child endangerment and resisting arrest. He was released on Monday.
