Dothan, Alabama (The Weekly Vice) - Kelly Laster, a 29-year-old Dothan woman was jailed Wednesday after she allegedly left her toddler son to die in a storm drain and then went to Wal-Mart to shop.
According to Dothan police, Laster's parents, with whom she lives with, woke up around 3:00 a.m. to find their daughter and her two children missing. After finding her at a local Walmart with only her 5-year-old daughter, a frantic search began for her other child. The toddler was found by his grandfather, in a storm drain about 150 yards away from the family's residence.
Investigators say Laster placed the toddler in the storm drain between 2:00 and 3:00 a.m. before walking to Walmart with her older child. Detectives estimated the boy had been in the drain for about 45 minutes before he was found. The boy received minor scratches, but was otherwise uninjured.
Laster was booked into the Houston County Jail on charges of attempted murder. She is currently being held on a $200,000 bond. If convicted, she faces 10 to 99 years or life in prison for the class A felony.
