Williamsburg, Virginia (The Weekly Vice) - Shirley Martin, a 56-year-old Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles employee, was killed Thursday while conducting a road skills exam for a driver who had applied for a driver's license.
According to the Williamsburg Police Department, a 36-year-old woman, who's name has not been released, was taking her driver's exam in a 1998 Honda 4-door sedan around noon on Thursday.
Investigators say the driver was attempting to complete the exam when she lost control of the vehicle, struck a tree and the vehicle overturned. Martin was airlifted to VCU Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead on Friday around 1:30 a.m. The driver, who was also injured, was taken to Williamsburg Sentara Hospital. Her condition is unknown. Police believe speeding may have been a factor in the accident and an investigation is underway.
DMV spokeswoman, Melanie Stokes, released the following statement in a telephone interview: "The DMV family is in mourning over the sudden tragic loss of one of our own. Our hearts are with our coworker's loved ones. We await details of the incident being investigated by law enforcement. Meantime, for the safety of all, we urge everyone to take extra care every time they get behind the wheel."
