Sherwood, Ore (The Weekly Vice) - Justin Ebensteiner, a 21-year-old Oregon man was jailed after his alleged car scam went horribly wrong the minute the victim drove away.
According to police, an investigation began in late April when a man told police that he had been scammed on Craigslist in an auto purchase.
The victim reportedly purchased a 1998 Audi with 77,000 miles that he found on Craigslist. After paying $6,700 for the automobile, he drove off as the proud owner of the new vehicle. That is until the vehicle's odometer began to spin backwards.
Investigators say Ebensteiner purchased the vehicle from it's registered owner for $1,700, rolled the odometer back and then sold it for a $5,000 profit. He also reportedly identified himself with the name of the person he obtained the vehicle from - the vehicle's registered owner.
Ebensteiner was booked into the Washington County Jail on charges of identity theft, forgery and submitting a false odometer disclosure. His bail has been set at $80,000.
