Joshua Monson - Forced To Attend Court Hearings In Restraining Chair After Stabbing Second Lawyer In The Neck With A Pencil

Everett, Washington (The Weekly Vice) - Joshua Monson, a 27-year-old inmate at the Snohomish County Jail, had to be placed in a restraint chair at his court hearing Monday after he allegedly stabbed his attorney in the neck with pencil earlier this week, then proceeded to do the same thing to a replacement attorney that had been assigned to him.

According to the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office, Monson reportedly stabbed defense attorney, Tom Cox, in the neck with a pencil he had managed to smuggle into court from his jail cell. Cox was not seriously injured, but resigned from the case a few days later.

Investigators say a new lawyer, Gurjit Pandher, was assigned to Monson. During another court hearing Friday afternoon, Monson stabbed Pandher using a similar jailhouse pencil. Gurjit was uninjured, but also resigned from the case.

Monson appeared in court again Monday. This time, however, he attended the hearing with his wrists and arms strapped to a restraining chair.

Monson's third lawyer, Jesse Cantor, asked that Monson be evaluated by doctors at Western State Hospital to determine if he's competent to stand trial.

Monson remains at the Snohomish County Jail on charges of second-degree murder. He has been charged in the January 2nd shooting death of Brian Jones. Prosecutors are expected to file a motion asking that Monson be restrained during all of his pretrial court hearings.
