Summerville, South Carolina (The Weekly Vice) - Arthur Thompson, a 38-year-old Summerville man was jailed last week after he allegedly stole a police cruiser, sped off and then crashed it into a flatbed truck - because he "wanted to be on television."
According to Summerville Police, officers were called to a local Wal-Mart after Thompson attempted to steal a computer from the store. When store employees tried to stop him, Thompson dropped the computer, hopped into his car and fled the scene.
Officers used a description of the vehicle to locate Thompson, who was parked on a nearby road a short time later.
Investigators say when an officer tried to handcuff Thompson, he jerked his hands away and became combative, even landing a couple of punches on the deputy. The officer attempted to deploy a Taser, but that was also ineffective.
Thompson continued to brawl with the officer before jumping into the officer's Dodge Charger cruiser and then speeding away from the scene. The patrol car's dash-cam captured the action as Thompson raced down the road's median at more than 100 miles per hour, endangering the lives of several motorists.
Thompson's joyride came to a painful end when he collided with a flatbed truck carrying a tractor. He and the two people inside the truck were transported to local hospitals. When Thompson regained consciousness and found himself in restraints, he retaliated by spitting in the officers' direction.
He then admitted to being high on crack and asked if he had made the evening news.
Thompson was booked into the Dorcherster County Jail and charged with strong armed robbery, failure to stop for blue lights, assault on a police officer while resisting arrest, grand larceny, possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a crime of violence and throwing bodily fluids on a law enforcement officer. He was also charged by the South Carolina Highway Patrol with reckless driving.
