Robert Char - Charged With Murder After Beating Mother With Shovel Because She Asked Him To Help With Household Chores

Santa Ana, California (The Weekly Vice) - Robert Lawrence Char, a 49-year old Fountain Valley man, was arraigned on murder charges Wednesday after he allegedly beat his mother to death with a shovel because she asked him to help with household chores.

According to Fountain Valley police, Char became angry in June 2009 when his mother walked into his bedroom and asked him to help her with household chores.

He ordered her to leave his room, but when she didn't, anger allegedly turned to violence. Police say Char grabbed a shovel and repeatedly struck his mother in the head until she became unresponsive. He then fled the home after asking a neighbor to call 911.

Investigators say the victim, 74-year-old Joyce Char, was rushed to a local hospital where she was she treated for blunt force trauma to the head. Although she survived the beating, she remained hospitalized and unresponsive until her death in Dec. 2010.

Before his mother's death, Char was sentenced to 9 years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted murder, elder abuse, and abuse of a dependent.

In the wake of his mother's death, he now faces a new charge of murder with a sentence enhancement for the use of deadly weapon. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 26 years to life in state prison. He is being held without bail.
