Spartanburg, South Carolina (The Weekly Vice) - Julie Cothran, a 38-year-old Spartanburg woman was jailed after she allegedly stole a collection jar meant to help a 19-month-old child with a cancerous brain tumor.
According to the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office, Cothran was seen on surveillance video stealing a collection jar containing about $20 from the Carlisle Crossing convenience store in Boiling Springs on Monday.
The donation jar was a collection to help 19-month-old Bree Haga, who has been fighting a brain tumor for seven months. The girl is currently at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, where she recently began her sixth round of chemotherapy.
Investigators say Cothran turned herself in on Thursday around 1:45 p.m. She admitted to taking the money, and stated that she needed it to help support her drug habit.
She claimed that she didn't know what the money was for, and that she has written a letter of apology to the girl's family. Since the story was reported Tuesday, the family has received about $600 in donations. Anyone who wants to donate money to help the Haga family can contact Jennifer Reeves at 864-978-4346.
Cothran was booked into jail and charged with an enhanced degree of petit larceny, which means she has two previous property crime convictions. She was released after posting $5,000 bond. If convicted, she could face up to 10 years in prison.
