Albuquerque, New Mexico (The Weekly Vice) - Six adults were arrested, and 17 children were placed in protective custody, after police discovered them all living together in a filthy casa, with no food, very little clothing, and only four mattresses.
Let's just think about that for a moment. 23 people, 4 mattresses and few articles of clothing.
According to New Mexico authorities, 17 children were placed in protective custody back in October when deputies dropped by the family's casa and discovered the children living in a home that was filthy and smelled strongly of urine and feces.
Investigators say the children belong to five siblings and one cousin who share the same residence.
Detectives allege that in addition to the appalling living conditions, the children (all under the age of 9) were found to be malnourished and in need of medical attention. The medical attention detailed in the arrest warrant included untreated sinus infections and urgent dental care due to rotting teeth.
Finally, detectives learned that the children had either been removed from school enrollment or had never been enrolled in school in the first place
Child, Youth and Family Services investigators were informed that the family had moved to at least three other states to avoid CYFD intervention prior to moving to New Mexico. The family was reportedly preparing to move again when authorities finally caught up to them.
Veronica Sarinana, 25, Nancy Pena, 28, Leonard Pena, 32, Mara Pena, 21, and Frances Pena, 24, were charged with four count of child abuse, two counts of physical abuse and two counts of mental abuse.
Monica Pena, 19, was not jailed for child abuse, but was picked up for failing to appear in court on an unrelated charge.
