DeSoto County, Florida (The Weekly Vice) - Mason Holland, an 18-year-old DeSoto High School basketball player faces a felony battery charge after he allegedly slammed a referee to the floor after he was called for a foul.
According to the DeSoto County Sheriff's Office, Holland was playing basketball against an opposing high school team Monday when 51-year-old referee, Jim Hamm, called him on a technical foul.
Investigators say the referee ejected Holland from the game, after Holland began arguing with him over the call.
That's when Holland allegedly shoved the referee, then picked him up and threw him to the floor.
Holland was taken into custody by a sheriff's office detective that had been assigned to the game.
Holland told detectives that he lost his temper and "took it out on the referee when he should not have."
The sheriff's office filed a probable cause affidavit against Holland for felony battery and has sent the charge to the State Attorney's Office for review.
