Los Angeles, California (The Weekly Vice) - Mario Francisco Hernandez, a 22-year-old Whittier man was jailed Thursday after he allegedly tried to run down his ex-girlfriend with a car after she turned down his marriage proposal.
According to the Pico Rivera Sheriff's Office, the incident began when Hernandez proposed to the 21-year-old woman at a local fast food restaurant with a bouquet of flowers and the question "Stacy Will You Marry Me" scribed across his car's rear window.
Hernandez reportedly had a ring on hold at a local jewelry store when he drove to the woman's work place, in anticipation that she would say "yes."
When "Stacy" said no and then walked away, Hernandez reportedly hopped into his car and came after the woman with a vengeance.
Deputies say Hernandez drove onto a sidewalk, through a row of bushes and into the restaurant parking lot, narrowly avoiding the woman. He then abandoned the vehicle, which had two flattened tires, and fled on foot with the bouquet of flowers.
"He did not take the rejection well," said Sheriff's Lt. Andrew Berg.
Investigators say deputies were headed towards Hernandez' home by helicopter when they spotted him walking down the street still carrying the bouquet.
Hernandez was booked into jail on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon. Bail in his case has been set at $30,000.
The woman, who reportedly has two children with Hernandez, has since filed for a restraining order.
The Weekly Vice Opinion:
Yeah, okay.... I'm going to take a completely different position on this than everyone else in the media has. Granted, our boy Hernandez here could use a good dose of prescription meds for his anger - but I'm wondering about all of the events that transpired up to this point.
Here's a few details of the story that most of the media skipped in their reports. The couple met when she was 15 years old and she apparently had been residing with his parents through two pregnancies and a long stint while he was on active duty.
It's unclear exactly what happened when he was released from active duty, however, it's pretty obvious to me he was making a pretty big effort to make the relationship an honest one, or at least salvage a relationship that might have drifted during his duty.
Whatever the case, a person wishing to drive over someone, usually doesn't jump a side walk and tear through bushes. That to me sounds like the dude was angry and wanted to make a point that he was angry - NOT that he was trying to run this girl down.
Then again... if she was willing to say yes to two babies, yes to a free place to stay for all of those years, and then no to making the relationship legitimate..... then perhaps he did crack and wish to run the girl down. I really don't think that's the case, though.
Assault with a deadly weapon seems a bit of a stretch in this case.
