San Diego, California (The Weekly Vice) - Virginia Kelly, a 75-year-old former head of the Latino Foster Parents Association, was convicted Friday after she allegedly stole thousands of toys from area charitable organizations.
Prosecutors say Kelly hoarded more than $200,000 of toys that were donated to Toys For Tots, the Child Abuse Prevention Center, and other non-profits.
Authorities alleged she hoarded the toys in hopes of later selling them for cash, however, she claimed many of the toys were duplicates, insisting no kid would want the same toy twice.
The District Attorneys Office made a visit to her home and she allegedly told them that all the toys had been given away. A surveillance of her home, however, found her and a friend loading bag after bag of presumed toys into her car.
Investigators later executed a search warrant which netted over 11,000 toys that were stored at her home and two storage facilities.
Kelly has been found guilty of grand theft and could be sentenced to up to five years at her sentencing hearing in September.
