Jonesborough, Tennessee (The Weekly Vice) Tammy Elliott, a 37-year-old Tennessee woman, was arrested Wednesday after failing to seek medical care for a child's injury that will now require extensive cosmetic surgery to repair.
According to the Washington County Sheriff's Office, Elliot's 5-year-old niece will require multiple surgeries to correct damage caused by ear and nose injuries after a lack of medical care allowed infection to spread.
Elliott, who was the child's guardian at the time, said she couldn’t take the child to the doctor for treatment because her car was broken down for about a year.
An investigation was opened in March when a mental health therapist saw the infected injury and notified child services.
The investigation revealed that the girl had sustained injuries to the cartilage in her nose that ultimately left her without any viable cartilage in her nose area.
“The victim’s nose had degraded to the point that the membrane of the septum is gone and will require multiple surgeries to repair,” said cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Jim Branter.
The girl had also received several cuts on her ear, chin, legs and ankle that Elliott said were caused by a razor. The injury to her ear had also become severely infected.
Elliot, who is the child's aunt, fled the area after a Johnson City Juvenile Court Judge removed the child from Elliott’s custody and placed her with another aunt.
Elliott was booked into the Washington County Detention Center on two counts of aggravated child abuse. Her bond was set at $150,000.
