Lighthouse Point, Florida (The Weekly Vice) – Candice Johansen, a 24-year-old Florida woman, was arrested Tuesday after her 5-year-old son was found wandering the street alone in the middle of the night wearing only his underpants.

According to the Broward County Sheriff's Office, a police officer spotted the boy and asked where his mother was. The child reportedly told the officer she was "smoking a cigarette somewhere."

Investigators say the officer went to the boy’s nearby apartment and found another a 3-year-old boy sound asleep on a bunk bed in the living room.

Police searched the apartment and surrounding complex for about an hour looking for Johansen but didn’t find her. She returned to the apartment at about 2:30 a.m., telling officers that she had been out front the entire time.

When officers told her they had been searching for her out front, she changed her story and stated that her boyfriend, 34-year-old Aaron Brown, was supposed to be watching the boys.

Officers located Aaron Brown about a quarter of a mile away - getting out of a taxi after visiting a local bar. He told police he wasn't supposed to be watching the boys.

Finally, Johansen took a third stab at explaining herself, telling police she had a babysitter. No babysitter could be found.

Frustrated, Johansen finally resorted to screaming as officers hauled her to jail.

After arriving at the jail, Johansen reportedly retaliated by kicking one officer in the groin and another in the crotch. She also allegedly spat on on a female booking officer who was attempting to search her.

Johansen was booked into the Broward County jail on charges of child neglect and battery on a law enforcement officer. Her bond was set at $6000.

Aaron Brown was also arrested for violating a restraining order.

Both children have been placed in foster care and there will be a hearing in three weeks to find permanent arrangements for them.
