Sandy Ridge, North Carolina (The Weekly Vice) William Plaster, 37, and Shannon Fortenberry, 37, both from North Carolina, were arrested Thursday for allegedly plotting to murder their 4-month-old son.
According to the Stokes County Sheriff's Office, an investigation began after the infant was taken to the hospital on April 22.
Plaster and Fortenberry claimed their son had fallen off a couch and was unresponsive and twitching. Doctors determined the infant had suffered various broken ribs, a broken right leg and severe head trauma. The infant's injuries resulted in retinal and brain hemorrhaging and the medical diagnosis was non-accidental head trauma.
Investigators say the infant is in a permanent, vegetative state. He has been released from the hospital into the care of a foster home but not expected to live.
"We believe he was severely abused by both parents," said Stokes County detective Kelly Craine. "There was evidence of ribs healing from previous incidents and evidence of previous brain hemorrhaging."
Plaster and Fortenberry were booked into the the Stokes County Jail on charges of attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and felony child abuse. Their bonds were set at $10 million each.
