San Diego, California (The Weekly Vice) - James Neal, a 56-year-old ex-NASCAR driver, was arrested after he allegedly led police on a high speed chase.
According to the Orange County Sheriff's Office, deputies tried to pull Neal over for not having a front license bracket at around 3am. Instead of yielding to officers, Neal punched the gas.
Deputies say Neal reached speeds of up to 140 mph in his silver 2003 Chevy Corvette Convertible with high performance engine.
Once Neal reached the county line, deputies turned the chase over to California Highway Patrol.
According to authorities, Neal continued to flee until the engine of his Corvette blew up, ending the event at about 3:30am.
"He was going so fast that they lost sight of him," said sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino.
Neal's website states that he was a licensed NASCAR driver and won three races in the early '80's until he retired. Neal came out of retirement to continue racing in 2008.
Neal was booked into the Orange County jail on felony evading charges. He pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to a month in jail.
