Elkmont, Alabama (The Weekly Vice) - Nannie Johnson, a 63 -year-old Alabama woman, was arrested Friday after police found 40 dead dogs in her freezer.
According to the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office, deputies discovered the frozen dogs in two chest freezers and an upright freezer, laying amongst her food. They also rescued 29 other malnourished and emaciated dogs from her yard.
Investigators say the dogs were found after a concerned citizen reported possible mistreatment of dogs at the home.
Johnson, who bred and sold dogs, told authorities she froze the dead dogs because someone was coming to help her bury them but had not yet come to do so.
Johnson’s neighbor says Johnson suffered from a stroke in December. They noticed changes in her personality and say she has not been the same since.
Johnson was booked into the Limestone County jail on more than 40 charges of animal cruelty. Her bond was set at $32,000.
