Tehran, Iran (The Weekly Vice) – Iranian officials have announced that women who are caught with suntans may be arrested and imprisoned.
According to Tehran's police chief, Brig Hossein Sajedinia, a national crackdown on opposition sympathizers would also be extended to women who have been deemed to be violating the spirit of Islamic laws.
Iran has now warned suntanned women and girls who looked like "walking mannequins" with imprisonment as part of a new drive to enforce the Islamic dress code.
National law stipulates that women are required to wear headscarves and shape shrouding cloaks, however many women wear fashions that barely adhere to the regulations.
The announcement came just days after cleric Ayatollah Kazim Sadighi announced that promiscuously dressed women were the likely cause of deadly earthquakes, such as the devastating earthquake in Haiti earlier this year.
Sajedinia says they are not going to tolerate the situation and will first warn those found in this manner. Arrests will follow if the senseless tanning persists.
