
Beaufort, NC (The Weekly Vice) - Richard Paul Fodrie, a 34-year-old Newport man was jailed after he allegedly led police on a high speed chase because he wanted one last cigarette before he went to jail.
According to the Beaufort Police Department, Officer Timothy Tucker was on patrol when he witnessed a 1994 Chevrolet Astro van without a license plate slowing down as he passed.
The officer followed the van, and tried to pull him over using his lights and siren when the driver suddenly sped up to 45 mph. in a 35 mph zone, according to investigators.
The driver failed to stop as he reached speeds of 100 mph on N.C 101. The officer stayed behind him until the driver finally pulled the van over.
Fodrie was taken into custody and submitted to a breathalyzer test, which he failed. When asked why he fled, he stated that he knew he was going to jail and he wanted one more cigarette.
Fodrie was booked into the Carteret County Jail and charged with felony habitual driving while impaired, felony speeding to elude arrest, driving while license revoked, open container of alcohol, no license plate, and speeding. His bond was set at $10,000.
