Milwakee Teacher Gets “Snippy” With Student For Playing With Her Braids - Cuts Student’s Braids Off In Front Of Class

Milwaukee, WI (The Weekly Vice) - An unnamed 1st-grade teacher at Congress Elementary School in Milwaukee was given a $175 citation after she cut a 7-year-old girls' braids off because she was playing with them in class.

According to investigators, 7-year-old Lamya Cammon was playing with her beaded braids when her teacher called her up to the front of the class and then cut off one of her braids in front of other students.

The girl reportedly walked back to her desk and started crying as her peers laughed. That's when the teacher allegedly asked the girl "Now what you gonna go home and say to your momma?"

Milwaukee public school officials say the teacher has been removed from Lamya's classroom and has been placed in a different room by the principal while the district conducts and investigation into the incident.

The teacher has been charged with disorderly conduct and received a $175 fine.

Teachers have a tough, thankless job. I think this one went just a little too far with the discipline/punishment this time. Poor decision yes, but I don’t think it is one she should lose her career over.

When I went to school way back in the dark ages girls played with their braids all the time.

Never saw a teacher cut them off and ridicule the kid. This teacher needs removed from around kids.

"Now what you gonna go home and say to your momma?".....i think this statement speaks of past hostility between teacher and momma...no assault charges?

never humiliate a kid in front of their peers. I am not familiar with Wisconsin but here in Florida it is stressed that we NOT do anything to harm the students and this was way out of bounds.

I am sure she will be fired, and I hope her certification revoked.

The girl was 7! If you cannot cut it with kids that young, you aren't cut out to be a teacher, bottom line. The lower elementary grades are by far the easiest in terms of discipline.

How in the world was this kid bothering anyone by playing with her braids? Maybe it helps her focus... I used to always have something on my wrist to play with to help me concentrate in school. Some kids shake their legs, others twirl their hair. Is she going to start cutting legs off next? Seriously, WTF was she thinking?

Some may think it's not a big deal, but do you have any idea how hard it is for colored people to get their hair to grow? I am being serious here, they lack oils that Caucasians have in their hair and it gets brittle and "nappy" much easier. It takes a lot to maintain that hair, and they are very sensitive because of that reason. This little girl had beautiful hair. How dare that teacher!

And Ida your right. There is info on the victim, but not the teacher? Why are they refusing to release that information. People have the right to know. Also, I really want to know if she was white or black, and whether or not this could possibly be a hate crime...

Oh and has anyone ever seen Matilda? You know that part where that evil principal who's name I do not remember gets mad at that little girl because she wore braided pigtails and she hated pigtails and the woman starts swinging the girl around by them? That's what this reminds me of.....

Im sorry, but a hate crime? why does everything have to be turned into a white/black issue. Every claims they want to get rid of racism yet the first thing people wanna know when the victim is a black person is whether or not the assailant was white.

Remember, that even though this is the internet its still a form of media. only one side of the story is told. you dont know what is going on in this womans life. I agree that what she did was wrong and completely out of line, but I dont think its worth ruining her life over. It takes a lot to become a teacher. If felons can get 3 strikes, then why is it people in the work place only get one?

Eastside said...

Well Atom you pose some good questions. However on the 3 strikes issue. Felons aren't sent in to work with young children either, No I don't think she needs another shot at these kids. Maybe she can teach college or some such though.

As far as the race thing goes we have no idea what ethnicity the teacher is so I don't see how race applies. Maybe she hates kids though.

I wonder how long that teacher had listened to the incessant click-clacking of those beads as the child "absent-mindedly played with her hair"... how many times she'd asked or told the student to stop. if school starts in August of September, all the other students and their teacher have been listening to a disruptive and annoying noise hour after hour, day after day, week after week, month after month... I don't know who wouldn't lose their temper. cutting the braid off wasn't the best idea, granted, there are far more diplomatic ways to approach a problem like this. wonder why she didn't just send a note home to her parents, or something.

I'm a 30 year old man, and if someone tried to cut my hair I would stab them in the face.
