Kelliher, MN (The Weekly Vice) - Betsy M. Hanks, a 25-year-old Kelliher woman was charged with second-degree intentional murder after she fatally shot her common-law-husband, then tried to blame it on her 3-year-old son.
According to police, Hanks called 911 on the morning of Oct. 20th to report finding her common-law-husband, 27-year-old Matthew D. Albert in bed with a gunshot wound to the head.
Albert stated to police that they had been up all night before arguing, after Albert accused her of having an affair with another man. Hanks stated that his claims were false.
After Hanks sent her two older children, ages 5 and 6, off to school that morning, She stated to police that she and the 3-year-old boy went off to Mizpah, MN for the day, leaving her 18-month-old and Albert behind at home.
When Hanks returned home, she stated that she found Albert in bed, shot in the head but still breathing, according to police. She said that Albert kept a pistol in a case by the bed, but the gun was missing.
Matthew D.Albert died on Oct. 22nd after being hospitalized at Twin Cities for 2 days.
On the same day Albert died, Hanks told an investigator that she had seen her 3-year-old son playing with the pistol and it went off as she tried to take it from him, wounding Albert in the back of the head.
However, later in the interview, Hanks admitted to killing Albert before heading to Mizpah because she wanted a better father for the children.
Hanks stated to investigators that she ditched the gun in a swamp. She later showed authorities where it was and the weapon was recovered.
Betsy Hanks was booked into the Beltrami County Jail on a charge of second-degree murder. She remains jailed in lieu of $1.5 million bail.

What these children obviously need is a better mother. It makes me sad that any jack-ass can have children and ruin their lives before it even starts. There is no doubt in my mind that these children will have issues dealing with this tragedy.
Good Gawd that is one ugly woman. She should have counted her blessings that anyone wanted to be with her. She may have killed the only man alive who could stomached seeing her nasty ass every day.

Matt was a good guy, and a good father.
I'm absolutely grieving the loss of two parents for these poor kids, regardless of the issues Betsy and he had. The kids are beautiful, they will have to deal with this forever.
I'm shocked at these events. Please pray for those 4 kids.
If only there was a way to separate from a spouse legally... without putting a bullet in his head, I mean.

She attended High School for a while with me... she was crazy even then... poor kids and poor guy who managed to handle her for so long :( Really is a pity
Those kids are great.And have lost a WONDERFUL father. Betsy was always a liar, and I suppose she thought since she had lied her way out of so many other situations that this would be no differant. What gets to me is that she is still SMILING every time she walks into court. And YES she did have a man on the side.
She has no idea (or does not care) that the actions she has taken effect more than just herself. She has forever changed the lives of so many people, mostly her 4 wonderful children. Although they are in a safe and loving home, they will forever deal with the loss of their father. And their mother, no matter how awful a mother she always was.
