Elkhart, Indiana (The Weekly Vice) - Police discovered a virtual landfill inside a home Tuesday night after neighbors contacted Animal Control officers to investigate an animal welfare complaint.

Do the images above look crazy enough? Well, that's only the beginning.

Along with piles of garbage, which had permeated every room of the residence, investigators discovered something even more shocking. 8 adults, 4 children and at least 45 animals - all residing in the same small house!

"There was eight adults in the house with four children, and what I would call terrible conditions," said Cpl. Dennis Russell of the Elkhart Police Dept. "Feces, cockroaches, carpet saturated with animal urine, and a strong ammonia smell from the house itself.... It's not a livable condition."

Investigators called Child Protective Services, who removed the children from residence and placed them with relatives. Animal control officers caged up and removed dozens of animals who were transported to the Elkhart County Humane Society.

Amy Bachman, who lived in the home with her three children (ages 3, 7, and 10), said the family was trying to care for the animals.

"This is not a puppy mill," said Bachman. "We gave these animals a loving home. These are not just dogs, they are my babies."

Misty Seabolt, who lived inside the home with her 10-year-old daughter agreed with Bachman.

"We've never sold one of these dogs that we've given away to a home. All we asked is that they took care of them. We never sold any of them," said Seabolt.

Three adults were arrested at the scene. Thomas Seabolt (Misty's husband) and Mark Martinez were arrested on outstanding warrants. Gloria Demoss, 52, was arrested on a warrant for failing to appear in court on a misdemeanor charge.

"I'm moving..... I've got until Thursday morning. That's when we go to court to get our children back. And, my first thing is getting a house to take my daughter to, and getting out of here, said Bachman.

The Weekly Vice Opinion:

Here we have 8 adults raising kids in a trash can, and yet when they get caught, they're yapping about giving dogs a loving home? WTF is up with that?

I'm not sure what's so loving about raising young kids in a stinkhole infested with fleas and cockroaches - but no one should be taking care of 45 animals when they obviously can't even take care of themselves.

My second issue is with the lack of charges. These adults should all be charged with child endangerment or a similar charge. Where are the animal abuse charges?

And why the hell would these people have any expectation of getting their children back, when they haven't proven they can provide a safe environment for these kids?

Indiana is quickly catching up to Florida in it's bid to become the stinking armpit of America. Think not? Have a look for yourself.

Why do these nasty people always have multiple myspace/facebook sites? How can someone just sit there on the computer living in and breathing in the filth surrounding them? How do they expect to keep track of all of those dogs? Seems like the one in the pick could have easily been buried in a heap of filth! How can they stand the roaches crawling all over them, or the multiple flea bites (I myself have had a flea problem from 3 cats and a dog. You better believe I bombed the hell out of my house!) Not to mention the scabies and bedbugs and ants and spiders and anything else disgusting. Head lice. I bet they had it all!

Also, how can you have a 3 year old running around in that? Not to mention a 7 and 10 year old, but think about it, that 3 year old was crawling around not too long ago, and it takes years to build up to this! That poor kid!

Also, where are the drug charges? These people all look like meth heads!

Ida_Slapter said...

The drugs are to well hidden in the debris.

I'm going to repeat myself:
People, pick up your trash and throw it in a can. Don't just put it in the floor or throw it out a window. PUT IT IN A CAN! I can not stress this enough.

Is there something in 'Mountain Dew' that makes people live like this?

It seems to be a common thread in trashed out houses.

AHAHAHA that Sean Bachman dudes myspace profile picture looks like a mugshot. You know you go to jail too often if you are posing like a convict for family photos

Hey Vice, regular reader here who grew up in the Goshen, Indiana area (google it)

Welcome to Elkhart. Heck, welcome to Elkhart County. Lots of messed up stuff goes on in this area especially in Elkhart.

I wasn't even surprised to see it happened there. This is just business as usual, which is part of the reason there is a lack of charges.

Half the city is like this.

When young I knew people dirt poor. their house never looked like this. It looks like a teenagers room who have rebelled against their parents. Mine were slobs yet their houses look better than mine now. Guess some never get out of the teen age years.

Ida,
Your Mountain dew comment probably
relates directly to Juggalettes meth observation. Tweekers drink the hell out of it the sugary resins coat their mouths and help stop the sandy cotton mouth sensation. It also helps them get "meth mouth" a lot faster.

Thanks Eastside... I never knew. and damn....

I agree this is disgusting and it is a good that the children were removed. I didn't used to understand this behavior until I watched Hoarders on A&E. Watch it and you will understand.

Wtf? If those nasty women are supposed to be "housewife and mother" for an occupation, then wtf are they doing all day. They have plenty of time to take showers!, wash their hair and pick up that filty, nasty house. Get off your lazy asses. You are the epitomy of white trash. You dont deserve to be called either housewife or mother. Probably sitting at the local bar spending government money, I bet.

Yes, this is a puppy mill. A typical one. These people make a mint churning out and selling defective dogs, they don't report the income, they don't pay taxes, they keep collecting welfare. And dummies buy these puppies through online ads, website, craigslist ads, newspaper ads, pet stores etc This puppy mill trade wouldn't go on if people would just stop buying these advertised dogs. Look at http://www.stoppuppymills.org for more on how they operate.

Part of the problemn is that our slow-witted authorities don't pass licensing and inspection laws to get a handle on this.

I am amazed at how people live, and the ability of people to survive. We don't know why they lived this way so we shouldn't judge, however, it doesn't have to be dirty.

Henry said...

Well, at least they caught them before someone died in the house. Sadly, the body would likely have just been left there to rot. Strange sad business all around.

Alyssa said...

I have to agree with Henry. I can't believe that nobody noticed this before. I feel terrible for those children. They will be scarred for life having a start out in such a trash pit as that!!

Sinamin- I agree with your mugshot photo syndrome comment. Better yet, I copied and pasted his About Me from his myspace.
About me:
Married (happily for 13 yrs, so please don't even try) with 3 kids.Living in Elkhart Indiana and doing my best to teach them the right path in life.get ahold of me

I suppose this is HIS idea of the right path. I really feel sorry for those kids. Is there anyway these adults can be restricted from pro-creating? Maybe some chlorine in their gene pool would help.
