Stone Mountain Park, Georgia (The Weekly Vice) – Patrick Leithead, 36, of Stone Park was arrested September 20th when an off-duty officer caught him molesting a girl in a park bathroom.
Deputy Ruth Stringer of the Dekalb County Sheriff’s Office says she was at Stone Mountain Park when she sensed something was up in the bathroom stall next to her.
Her instincts proved correct – Leithead was sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl just inches away – and the girl's parents, who were waiting for her outside the bathroom, were unaware of what was happening.
According to Stringer, she first noticed the man’s shoes underneath the stall wall and described that the voice of the teen sounded distressed. She ordered Leithead out of the stall and went to the girl, who appeared to be shaken and disheveled. When the girl assured her she was okay, Stringer shouted for someone to call 911.
But Deputy Stringer wasn’t the only off-duty officer who would assist in the apprehension of this filthy pervert – an officer with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was also nearby and had seen Leithead earlier observing women outside the bathroom. She detained the suspect until authorities arrived, while Stringer took care of the victim.
Leithead was booked on charges of aggravated child molestation. He is being held without bond.

Patrick Leithead is a human being and has never comitted a crime in
his life. He has brain damage from birth but has been a good and decent person. He is a son, a friend, a good and gentle person. Why didn't the officer who watched him approach him and inquire about what she calls suspious behavior if she had acted up front, perhaps he would not now be accused of something he doesn't even at this time understand. He hasn't even had a trial nor has he been convicted of any crime. Where are all those good God fearing folks?

If he is so mentally deficient that not only does he not "comprehend" what he did but you're choosing to use that as a defense against him then perhaps you'd mind explaining to the class why he wasn't with a caregiver or under some sort of supervision? Typically, people with a decreased mental capacity who are incapable of understanding the consequences of their actions are assigned to the care of someone who will ensure this sort of thing DOESN'T happen.

An off duty officer with the GBI can't interrogate someone for standing outside of a bathroom and looking at girls. It may LOOK strange, but technically the only person who'd have had the authority to speak to him would have been an ON-duty officer, i.e. one of the park police.
And are you ACTUALLY trying to blame the police for the fact that this guy sexually assaulted a teenage girl? What kind of sick person are you?

I'm sure your novel and totally NOT inhuman approach to dealing with disabilities can get a lot of traction, so I encourage you to run for public office so you can get your ideas turned into laws, because I'm sure there's plenty of "normal," un-mentally disabled folks in your neck of the woods who've had it up to here with the 'tards and whatnot.

Can you imagine the fear that poor child endured? Can you imagine what it must have been like to have that monster attack you in a bathroom stall? That is the stuff nightmares are made of, that is the stuff, even at my age, I fear more than anything. You know, if I didn't know Patrick personally, I would probably think the same thing as most of you. However, I do know Patrick and have known him all of my life. Patrick is mentally handicapped. He has the mind of a 12 year old. The news is making him out to be a monster, and that he is not. Would the same thing have happened if it were two 13 year olds in the same stall? I don't think so. And, in his mind, he is 12 and he just happens to be in a 36 year old body. Don't always believe what you read because not all of the facts are given. Think about Patrick as being a child, who has never been in a trouble in his life, who is now in jail with men who don't know his story. Yes, he is of mind enough to know right from wrong, but so is any 12 year old. And, if this were a 12 year old boy, he would not be in jail. I do think that there should be consequences and I'm very sorry for the little girl, but a 12 year old boy in a 36 year old man's body SHOULD NOT BE IN JAIL AND SHOULD NOT BE PORTRAYED THIS WAY.

As for those of you who think it's "inhumane" for people of decreased mental capacity to be under some sort of supervision - take enough time off from hugging your goddamn trees and burning your incense to consider the fact that without supervision - meaning a CAREGIVER - people with mental disabilities could hurt themselves or others. If this man had had a nurse to care for him and accompany him, this poor little girl would probably never had to endure what she did.

As for Patrick, I've known him all my life and was a VERY surprised with all this. I am definitely NOT making excuses for him- my heart goes out to that girl and I thank God those police officers were there! But so you can hear a different perspective...I promise you he has the mental capacity of a child. That does not mean it's like talking to a 12 year old boy or even an 8 year old; it's like talking to someone in a different world. THAT is not coming across. As someone who knows more of the story, he was reacting out of emotion- he went to the park not to molest a child...his mind is not capable of such calculation. There he became upset and that is how he chose to take it out. From what I know about him and about the story (things that all of you don't know), is that this may not be about another child molester pervert, but about someone who is incapable of understanding consequences and reality. Again, I'm not saying what he did is excusable. But everything is not just black or white.

To all the people that are friends and family of this individual, I agree with you. If he is mentally handicapped, He shouldn't be in a real jail. He should be in a hospital. I think that his family and friends should be the ones paying the repercussions for this crime, for allowing it to happen. I would say... maybe... at least a year in prison for each. Then maybe they will learn how to properly care for the mentally disabled. I mean, your excuses are all the same- that his mentality is the same as a child's. I guess its easy for people to have very strong opinions about things they don't know anything about, especially when it concerns something as terrible as child molestation. I'm reading some of these posts and can't believe the hatred and nasty comments people are saying, and they don't have the first idea about what happened in that bathroom. There arne't surveillance cameras to see what happened. The two off duty officers were outside the bathroom when it all went down according to Channel 2 News. Now on this site, Deputy Stringer was apparently in the next stall. What actually happened? Could it possibly have been that this teenager was trying to get over on a handicapped adult by offering him sex and then trying to rob him in the bathroom stall? Deputy Stringer didn't say this girl was crying out for help or screaming or anything like that. The point being is that I don't know, and all of you don't know. None of us posting here were there. And yet everyone is so quick to make judgements about what should happen to this handicapped adult. It hasn't gone to trial for those questions to be proven. Seriously? We are all reacting to what has been reported in the news which is anything but the whole truth. I just think its sad that there are so many people out there who don't even hesitate to say some hateful things about something they have barely any knowledge about. I am a policeman with over 30 years experience. I also happen to know Patrick. He is mentally retarded. It takes less than a minute talking with Patrick to know he is mentally retarded. I do not know why he went into the bathroom, none of us do. I understand he said "confessed" to the police he wanted to rape the girl. Patrick does not know the meaning of the word rape. It is very easy to lead a mentally retarded person to say whatever you want them to say. I do not know how the questions were asked, but he does not have the mental capacity to waive any of his rights and he should not have been questioned until he had an advocate present. He had no business going into the bathroom. Patrick does possess an understanding between right and wrong. However, like many persons who are mentally retarded he can be impulsive and do things like going to places they should not go. I have not talked to Patrick and I cannot and will not justify his actions. He is going to have to face the charges and a court will decide exactly what happened and better yet, why it happened. Thank you Frank. I totally agree. I know Patrick and he's not the MONSTER you all are making him out to be. While he is mentally challenged, that doesn't mean he requires supervision 24/7. He's never done anything like this before and that should account for something.
