Belleville, IL (The Weekly Vice) – Elyse Mamino, a 23-year-old Illinois woman who delivered a baby into a toilet and then attempted to drown her, was found mentally fit to stand trial on Wednesday.
According to police, Mamino attempted to murder her newborn infant by drowning her in a toilet during a party at a relative’s home. The officer who responded to a 911 call was able fish the baby out of the toilet and revive her.
Investigators say the baby was hospitalized for two weeks – and then released back into her mother’s custody by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.
A subsequent investigation led to the discovery of another infant child’s remains in February. The child's remains were found in the drawer of a dresser located in Mamino’s basement. Authorities believe Mamino gave birth to that child in September of 2007, but the cause of death is still unknown.
After the remains were found, DCFS requested protective custody of Mamino’s child.
Mamino is being held at the Monroe County jail on a charge of first degree attempted murder in lieu of $250,000 bond.
She has not yet been charged in connection with the deceased infant.
The Weekly Vice Opinion
This frickin’ fruitbat tries to murder her little tiny baby girl in a toilet, and the DCFS actually gives the child back afterward? What kind of twisted individual keeps the remains of their own child stuffed in a drawer in a basement?
Whoever was responsible for allowing this poor little thing to be released in to her murderous mother’s custody needs to be fired. Like, now.

What the fuck were they thinking giving the child back to her? She just tried to drown the baby in a frickin toilet 2 weeks ago but she's had time to reflect so she will be a great mother? I agree Rebecca they should be fired ASAP.
This bitch sickens me. Lock her up and throw away the key.
I'm confused... The baby was released back to the mother but the mother is in jail now.
Who actually has the baby now?
No matter where the baby is this is one twisted sister.
I believe she's in protective custody again. But don't quote me on that.
I genuinely hope that she was given over to a family member, since it was most likely a family member at the home who called 911...which at least demonstrates that SOMEONE in the poor girl's family gives a damn about her.
Having been a child who was abused at one point, and reported it to DCFS and with me being from Illinois, I can say I am not surprised they released the baby back to her.
Damn this one is pretty close to home. she looks like she is not mentally able to take care of a child. What the hell is DCFS thinking? Hell here is St. Louis if you smoke a little pot you will have DFS in your business for 2 years (so far).
After a lot of digging, I think I finally found her twin sister - who was featured on the weekly vice last month.

a bit of a resemblence, no?
haha....BKarma, you're right. They do look like sisters.
Good memory, dude !
I dont think she appears mentally fit to look after babies.I dont put much weight on what the psychiatrists say.
Its all opinion and speculation.Psychiatry is not a science-they have zero scientific, objective proof whether someone is mentally fit or unfit so the courts should give much less weight to their opinions-which are after all just opinions-which as humans can be flawed.
That said though how could she keep a baby in a drawer for two years?
Sorry for sounding vulgar but woulnd't there be a strong smell?
Wouldnt somebody in the house have been curious abut it?
The child service worker who turned that baby back over to this woman should be in jail right along with her. How long did they really think that baby would live after they found the remains of a previous one? Some people are just plain damn stupid...
There is something terribly wrong with our country, this whole ordeal. The biological mother, the case worker and the system.
iwinc - They weren't determining if she was mentally fit to care for children, they were determining if she was mentally fit to stand trial. Such determinations are based on several factors - does she understand the gravity of what she's done? Did she understand it at the time? Does she have a history of mental illness? And a whole laundry list of other crap that would take faaaar too long for me to type. But you get the gist. -=0)
As for the smell...a body only smells for a certain length of time. Given the fact that it was an infant, it probably didn't take very long to decompose, and given the environment it was in...well, I'll spare you the details, but there were likely environmental factors that sped up the process. It was also in an enclosed area in a basement, and there were likely no vents to carry whatever scent there may have been through the rest of the house. So it is pretty feasible that no one would have detected an odor.
Basements also tend to be cooler, which help mask the smell.
Man Rebecca remind me not to piss you off. Sounds like you know a thing or two on this subject.....
I'm just kidding.
I meant hiding a dead body, not killing a baby. I wasn't very clear on that was I?
Thanks rebecca
Who in their right mind says "We know the cops think you want to kill this kiddie, so here you go here's your kiddie, try not to finish what you started, okay?"
Someone obviously deserves to be fired for that atrocious decision.
