Boulder, Colorado (The Weekly Vice) – Seven self-proclaimed hippies and one Boulder resident were arrested last Wednesday when a custodian discovered them sleeping atop the Boulder Public Library.
According to Boulder police, seven members of the Rainbow Family – a group of nomad hippies – were caught catching some winks on the roof of Boulder's public library. The arrests include: Christine Hodge, 22, Joshua Cole, 21, Aaron Waldeck, 19, Kirstin Humason, 21, Eli Dworkin, 19, Thaddeus O’Hail, 18, and Salvatore Gelosos, 22.
An eighth individual, K. Wheeler of Boulder, was also arrested.
According to police spokeswoman Sarah Huntley, a custodian was the first to notice the group atop the library. He contacted authorities, who were forced to use a fire truck ladder to gain access to the roof. Officers discovered, in addition to eight slumbering hippies, various personal belongings and two dogs. The group was escorted off the roof and arrested.
Huntley went on to say that the building lacks “easy access” to the roof, concluding that the suspects would have had to physically “climb up the side of the building,” using the surrounding landscaping to assist them.
Most of the Rainbow Family members were released within hours of their booking on personal-recognizance bonds.
Waldeck was still being held Thursday on a $350 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Boulder County Court on Friday. Wheeler was issued a summons and released from custody. The dogs were taken to the Boulder Valley Humane Society where a bath surely awaited them.

Kudos to the Boulder police for not finding underhanded ways to heap a bunch of irrelevant charges on a group of harmless burn-outs. I’m just surprised there weren't any drug charges.
Seriously, take a look at Mr. Cole. Now there’s a fine individual who’s likely well acquainted with making bongs out of snorkels and copious amounts of duct tape.

For those who have never been to the Republic of Boulder. Hippies are nothing new in that town and I'm surprised they even stood out.
Hippies are nothing new anywhere in Colorado's bigger cities. I've seen them crawling all over the parks in Colorado Springs and the various suburbs of Denver.
Seriously, they should sick Cartman the Hippie Exterminator on them! Filthy hippies!
When I was 19 or 20, I would have thought that was a blast.
And you are right, Colorado is a hippie state.
I can dig a hippie in all aspects except one.
I hate that "Earth" scent crap they spray on themselves to cover up marijuana smell.

You know what I can't seem to get over?
Miss Hodge is the only one there not only with clean hair but with an actual hairSTYLE. She looks so out of place. And she won't even look at the camera.

This was funny and I would have to agree Joshua Cole does look a lot like Manson - just not so maniacally crazy. Great article. Hippies ain't that bad.

The police sound very reasonable in this case--harmless stoners it seems. At U of Cinn OH there was a brand new dorm, many stories tall, that was shut down due to fire code failures. Exploring that thing (stoned) as a 19 yr old was a real blast...camping on a library roof sounds equally so!
Cartman will launch a campaign soon enough to ban the use of public library rooftops as play ground for hippies. When hippies are running out of places to smoke weed and get high, they will retreat from Colorado.
