Riddle Me This – Will Valerie Beale Get 35 to Life for Threatening her Baby With A Knife?

Burlington, VT (The Weekly Vice) – Valerie Beale, a 23-year-old Vermont resident, pleaded not guilty to a charge of attempted first degree murder at her arraignment on Monday.

Beale was first arrested on Sunday when Burlington police responded to a report that she allegedly threatened to stab her 13-month-old baby girl and her boyfriend, 26-year-old Allen Charbonneau.

According to Charbonneau’s affidavit, it all began when Beale’s thirteen-month-old daughter began crying earlier that Sunday. Beale reportedly began to storm around the house and said to Charbonneau, who was seated on the bed holding the baby, “You shut up the ******* baby…or I will.”

Charbonneau went on to say Beale grabbed a 4-inch knife, pointed it toward the child, and said, “Well, I’ll quiet the baby down.” She then jabbed the knife at the baby's face, nicking Charbonneau's hand as he tried to protect her.

Beale let up, threatening to “put a smile on that baby’s face” if the baby didn't quiet down. Charbonneau described Beale's demeanor as “not a motherly look, but that of a crack addict if you stole his crack.”

Beale attacked Charbonneau and the baby yet again, scratching and punching her boyfriend in the back as he huddled on the floor over the baby. Eventually, he grabbed the baby and ran upstairs as Beale ran out of the house. Officers arrested her a half-mile from the home, still in possession of the knife.

Investigators say Beale stated she was simply quoting 'The Joker' from Batman films and that her intent was to amuse the baby. She further stated that when she saw the knife on the bed next to Charbonneau, she removed it to protect the baby.

She was booked into the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility on charges of attempted murder and two counts of domestic assault. She is currently being held without bail.

Prosecutors say the baby was released to Charbonneau’s custody under the supervision of the the Vermont DCF.

The Weekly Vice Opinion

Show of hands please – how many of you folks thing stabbing a baby is likely to put a smile on his/her face?

I’m not sure how in the world this woman could possibly think her story was plausible. Why would a knife be in the room? Why would she attack him while he was holding the baby? And last, why would she leave the house if she felt he would hurt the child?

She's a joker alright.

how many Teresa Winters are there around the country and around the world. I ask for Social Workers to speak up and let everyone know the truth what really goes on. How many clients do they have that are abusive, alcholic or drug addicts, who are pregnant, and have no right to bring a child into this world. There should be laws to protect the unborn child against coming into the world with less than nothing going for them. No one will want the child. The child will go from care home to care home, and cost the taxpayer £1000.00 a week. Where are the real laws to protect the innocent?

This girl has serious problems. She was friends with me on myspace once and we wrote to each other all the time. She was asking my advice on how to become a model. I felt really bad for her so I tried to help her out. I even contacted a bunch of photographers for her. Then on day I looked at her page and realized that she stole everything from my page, even pictures. She was pretending to be me. Needless to say I deleted and blocked her. For awhile I would check up on her page to make sure she wasn't posting anymore pictures of me. She's delusional.

Rebbeca,
On your show of hands comment. Old time gangsters put a permanment smile on your face by slitting you ear to ear. I believe this is what she meant.
Good thing the dad was home or this could have been tragic as hell.

I've known Valerie since 2003. She is troubled, yes, but so was her boyfriend. If you automatically assume that the allegations are true, then you have fallen for a logical fallacy. If you claim that you are not capable of base behavior, you're full of it.

Valerie loves her daughter very much, this is something that has been reiterated by her many times. The altercation was between her and her boyfriend, and any comments made were directed at him, not the child.

Also, you cannot charge someone with attempted murder based on alleged words which were only witnessed by the person making the accusations.

Valerie also has a history of mental illness and severe abuse, some of it no different than the sort dished up by others here.

I hope you all feel better about yourselves because you can sit in judgment on a person who's life you have little to no involvement in.

I've noted that none of you have questions the boyfriend's contributions to the circumstances.

If you allow the media to guide you to truth, then you have fallen for the sensational and the commercial (how you put a story determines the ratings).

In regards to "None," yes I too know Valerie, and yes she does have severe mental issues(who doesn't).
Sometimes we want to smash the face of a cop for making us late to something more important than reciving a ticket, Sometimes we would like to gut the fucker that stole our lover, and yes sometimes we would like to have a chat with god himself and give him a peice of our minds.
I think she was very wrong approching the situation, be it an outside influence or a direct action of fustration. She also didnt do herself any favors by running or lieing like she has in the past to athorities.
When i heard what she was going to court for I didnt think for a second it wasn't something she was incappable of doing. The story read in the paper and on this blog are yes, a bit opinionated as all media can be. But. I have paid for actions i wish i could take back... Valerie Is paying the price for her actions.
A childs life and a mothers love should be enough to keep a knife from a babies face.
But than again, humans are (unfortunatly) only human.
I just hope the state does it's job and keeps her from ever seeing that little girl truly smile.
